Facebook adventures

As I wasn't able to spend much time physically in Gravesham I decided to explore as many virtual ways to visit as I could. I was a bit worried about being so open on Facebook - the internet is a very easy place for people to forget their manners and their humanity. I decided to set up a Facebook profile for this project, to safeguard family and friends of mine who could be accessed through my personal account and so that I could be more intentional about who I was, and why I was posting. It was odd working out how much personal information to share. I decided a potted history, and a couple of photos of myself and one with my husband, felt like an honest way to connect.

It turned out to be utterly brilliant. I received a very warm welcome, made lots of lovely connections and had more recommendations of places to visit and things to do than I could fit into 6 months. I wanted to showcase a couple of the amazing photographs that got shared on my posts - to tempt me to visit these places. I loved how generous people were with acknowledging and celebrating where they live. I'm definitely going to use this approach again when I work in new communities.

  


Buckland Reserve (which I sadly didn't' get to)

I also got to find out about the campaign to save the Sulman Church building in Gravesend - you can find out more here. the campaign would like the original building preserved and used for commercial, residential or community use.

I also got to find out about the campaign to save Swanscombe Penninsula, whilst not in Gravesham, the plans for the development of this area would have an impact on the Borough. There's a few community groups who are actively trying to preserve the area, you can find out about one of them here

Flotsam and Jetsam - Day Two

I got up at 6am so I could go down to the river and arrive for low tide, 6.40am and sunrise, 6.45am. A lucky convergence – two natural cycles syncing up to start the day and the residency. I wanted to disrupt my usual day, and seek out connection with Gravesham. Except I stayed up late reading the children’s version of The Kalevala. I started with the English translation for adults but I was really tired. The children’s version was great but I ended up not going to sleep until 12.30am.  So I didn’t actually get up at 6am. I snoozed until ten past and then raced around to cycle down, not getting time for breakfast. It was cold and misty and grey, although the first photo doesn’t look it. I had a good mooch about along the foreshore, found a shell and beautiful piece of mother of pearl from an oyster. Working for happiness

I started the day with a Facebook Live from the Confidence Queen Genny Jones . In a packed and joyous half hour there was a friendly check in, some really great simple but powerful tips on setting goals, encouragement to connect and support each other and then some dancing. Bobbing around to 'Don't Stop me Now' was glorious - I don't dance often enough. I'm going to make more time to do this. It's a visit to Gravesham day, having completed a Covid test I drive over to meet with Mandy Hare, a Cultural Manger at Gravesham, which includes responsibility for The Woodville. Mandy began her career in the West End, before moving into managing venues and now she has a wider, more strategic remit. Since The Woodville first closed its doors because of the Pandemic (exactly a year ago) her working life has changed completely – and yet sort of not at all. Day One (ish) - images

I took 162 photos in 5 hours. Lots of them were too dark and there's a few photos of the tarmac. I'm going to have to think a bit more about what and how I document my experience. I also really need a better camera - I'm hoping to borrow one from a friend over the next few days. Here's a selection of things I saw and liked until my battery ran out.
